The Legend of Naupaka
In a story told throughout Hawai'i, there was a beautiful princess named Naupaka who fell in love with a handsome fisherman named Kaui. Due to the strict protocol of the time, Naupaka and Kaui were prohibited from marrying. Forced to part ways forever, she sadly removed the blossom that she wore in her hair and tore the delicate flower in half, giving one half to Kaui and keeping the other half for herself. She then was escorted to the mountains where her family lived. Broken-hearted but committed to each other, they both planted their halves of the flower. Each half grew and became the two forms of naupaka that we see today – the beach naupaka (naupaka kahakai) and the mountain naupaka (naupaka kuahiwi). It is said that when the two halves are reunited their bond will be everlasting and inseparable.
As alluded to in the legend, there will come a time when the blossom will be whole. Naupaka Consulting envisions commercial enterprise and community engagement as the two halves and we strive to cultivate sustainability and long-term prosperity.
